Dost Thou Have Any Phat L3wtz, Sirrah?

Disclaimer: This is going to be a “gaming” post. If you come here for the knitting or the cats or the witty repartee1, you’re fresh outta luck today. I warn the Gentle Reader that, if you’re not a gamer, the vocabulary of Online Gaming may be obscure, if not downright incomprehensible. It is a world unto itself, with it’s own argot. Grinding. Mobs. Zerging. PUG’s. End of Disclaimer.

The news from last night is that my Role-Playing Preferred server in Vanguard, Florendyl, will be merged with three other non-RP PvE Servers and lose its RP tag in the process. This will happen in the next two or three weeks. Even though they gave us a forum in which to vote and voice our opinions concerning the merger of Florendyl — and even though 76% of those who voted wanted Florendyl to not merge — they are merging us anyway.

Thank you, Sony Online Entertainment. Your dedication to customer service never ceases to amaze me.Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Now, I am not a “true” role-player. While my avatar, Laiane Wolfsong, does act consistently and does develop her own motivations and rationales for her actions in the game world, I don’t give her a ten-page background story, idiosyncratic habits, irrational fears of gnomes2, and a vocabulary like I’m playing a bit part in a Renaissance festival. I go to the role-playing servers in the MMORPG’s I play because they generally draw an older, more mature population of players. I enjoy the RP-ing atmosphere. I’m enjoying getting to know the RP-er’s in the diplomacy global chat channel — and they are the most generous and helpful people I’ve met in any MMORPG — and I feel that our little, sophisticated corner of the universe is about to be invaded by hordes of what I can only describe as the MMORPG equivalent of college students on spring break.

The barbarians are at the gate, as it were. As someone commented in channel last night, we’re about to be surrounded by people who think “KarateMan” and “xDrizztx” are lore-consistant names. I have no doubt that I will see some halfling named “Kotex Tampon.”

I’m going to have to brush up on my l33t speak.

  1. I suppose it can’t technically be labeled repartee since I’m the only one talking, unless I start having conversations with myself; no matter. []
  2. Only rational fears of gnomes, thankyouverymuch []

Nice diplomacy duds there, babe. I might point out to those otherwise unknowing that while Mass Multiplayer Online Role Player Gaming isn’t quite knitting, you *do* get crafting in game… you have to harvest the fiber (cotton, silk, firegrass, whatever) and spin it into yarn, then cloth, then secondary items before you make your +5 smoking jacket or whatever. The crafting in Vanguard SOH is better than anything else seen online to this point, but musty yarn shops are much more fun.

I put a lot of work into my characters, and while I wouldn’t dream of telling somebody what to name their character, ‘Kotex Tampon’ would irk me just a little.

I’m certainly not an RPG purist, but that’s part of the reason just can’t bring myself to give up my Gemstone account…roleplaying is pretty much required in anything that isn’t private chat. With the juvenile crap I read while playing Guild Wars, sometimes I need a — dare I say it — pure RPG environment.
